Divorce filings spike in month of August

The month of August is a common time of the year for couples in New Jersey and other states to end their marriages. The next major increase in filings for divorce will likely come in March of next year. Now is a popular time to get divorced for a couple of reasons.

First, the month of August is after the season of summer family vacations. People naturally prefer not to ruin this enjoyable time of the year for the children. Likewise, many people avoid getting divorced during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays -- seasons characterized by family togetherness and joy.

The reason why so many divorce filings occur in March is because individuals who have postponed getting divorced until after the holidays finally reach a period when things have festered and boiled over in early spring. Recent research also showed that when the real estate market is considered hot, this may translate into more divorce filings. This is because in a down market, homeowners might fear the financial aftermath of selling their houses.

The divorce process can naturally be stressful both emotionally and financially. However, it can also be a gateway to freedom for a person who feels trapped in an unsatisfying marriage in New Jersey. Appropriate legal guidance may help individuals to fight for their fair share of assets and to seek their best interests when tackling matters such as alimony during the divorce process. If a couple can address these matters through divorce litigation alternatives, such as mediation, they can avoid further court intrusion.
