New Jersey residents may recognize the dangers of distracted driving, and despite their own vigilance, the consequences of another driver’s distraction may impact their lives. Rear-ending car accidents are often caused by a driver failing to keep a safe following distance. If such a driver’s attention is distracted for only a moment, he or she can smash into the rear of another vehicle. A 59-year-old man recently died in a car accident that occurred in Lawrence Township.
The man was stationary at an intersection when a dump-truck driver allegedly smashed into the rear of his car. Witnesses accused the dump-truck driver of erratic driving and approaching at a high rate of speed prior to the collision. The impact apparently pushed the car into the water of an adjacent lake, and the truck followed. Both vehicles were submerged, and the driver of the car died. The truck driver suffered injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
The dump-truck driver remains under guard at the hospital. However, the prosecutor’s office reported that he is facing charges related to vehicular death and a bail of $250,000 was set. His court hearing was scheduled for a few days after the accident. The report mentioned that there were no passengers in either vehicle.
Residents of New Jersey who have lost a loved one in a car accident that was caused by the apparent negligence of another party may pursue the recovery of funeral and burial expenses. In addition, their lives may also be affected by the lack of income after such a tragic death. Help is available for those who are overwhelmed by court procedures and the filing of a wrongful death claim in a civil court. The alleged negligent driver, along with the owner of the vehicle, may be named as defendants. The court may award monetary judgment in the form of compensation for end-of-life expenses, along with any other damages as allowed by state laws.
