Child custody may spark conflict during divorce

A divorce in New Jersey can take an emotional toll not only on the divorcing individuals but also on their children. This is particularly true if the kids are at the center of a child custody dispute between the parents. Coming up with a parenting agreement that affords both parents time with the kids following divorce may be immensely helpful for the entire family.

When one parent is away from the kids after a divorce, he or she can still take steps to maintain a relationship with the children. For instance, the parent can use technology like FaceTime or Skype, as well as texting or emailing, if he or she has older kids. Video chat and the telephone can also be used to maintain communication with the kids.

If one of the parents ends up keeping the kids and moves away, it is also wise for this party to inform the other parent about what is taking place in the children's lives. After all, many children may not think about reporting how they are performing in school. The parent who moved away might choose to schedule a regular phone call or email to the other parent to offer updates on the children.

If two individuals in New Jersey are willing to go through divorce mediation, they may be able to develop an effective co-parenting agreement that takes into consideration both parents' wishes as well as the children's wishes. Otherwise, a judge will get involved and make child custody decisions for them. In this situation, the judge will make a decision based on what is in the best interests of the child.
