After TV talk show, father seeks child custody modification

Some New Jersey residents may have seen an episode of Dr. Phil in which a young teenager displayed an incredibly rude attitude. Clips from the show have been made into numerous memes, music videos and other online products. Now, the girl's father has taken issue with her sudden notoriety, and is asking the court for a child custody modification that would permit him to have more decision-making authority in the his daughter's life.

The father claims that the girl's mother is acting to exploit his daughter for financial gain. He asserts that his daughter has stolen cars, stolen her mother's credit card and behaved inappropriately with the knowledge and consent of her mother. He believes that the girl's lack of respect and behavioral issues are the fault of her mother.

The teen has achieved a degree of notoriety after her appearance on Dr. Phil. She has been invited to travel to Los Angeles, has appeared on other television programming and has secured an agent and producers. Her father does not agree with his daughter's pursuit of fame, and feels that she needs guidance and discipline. He is asking the court to allow him more say in his daughter's life.

In cases such as this, the court is tasked with making a decision that is in line with the best interests of the child. When a child is a teenager and when one parent consents to pursuing a career in entertainment, it can be difficult for the other parent to step in and force a change in direction. The father's claim that the girl's mother has allowed her to drop out of school may be central to the decision that is eventually reached in this case, especially if the mother has not secured her some form of tutoring or homeschooling. Many New Jersey residents will stay tuned to see how this child custody matter is resolved.
