Child custody issues can affect both parents and children

A divorce proceeding can naturally involve both heartbreak and frustration for adults going through it. However, the children of these adults are also affected by it, particularly when matters such as child custody are points of contention. A few tips may offer guidance for helping children through this type of family law proceeding in New Jersey.

First, it can be helpful for both parents to explain the marital split-up together. The children do not necessarily need to know all of the details. However, it is important to explain what exactly is happening and how this will impact them.

It is also paramount that the children know that they are not responsible for their parents' splitting up, as this is often a feeling that children of divorce deal with. It is furthermore important that the parents reassure the children that both parents love them. Some children may benefit from going to counseling during this period, as it will enable them to more easily process and express their emotions. Counseling can be done either individually or as a family.

If possible, it can be helpful for divorcing parents in the state of New Jersey to try to work out their child custody and other issues through mediation or negotiation. Through these processes, they can put together a parenting agreement that works for both parties without further court intrusion. However, if they are unable to find common ground, a judge will make decisions for the entire family, considering the best interests of the child first and foremost.
