Michael Strahan accused of underpaying child support

Michael Strahan, a former professional football player and current television personality, is facing serious allegations regarding the financial support of his children. His ex-wife is claiming that he has underpaid child support for a significant amount of time and has avoided other types of payments he is supposed to make concerning his kids. His former wife claims that he currently owes her approximately $500,000 in unpaid child support.

His children live with their mother in another state, where they attend public school. According to one report, he has paid the amount of support outlined in the court order, but she thinks he should pay more based on what he is currently earning. Some observers in New Jersey may think the mother is looking for additional support because her children will reach the age of 18 soon, ending his obligation to make payments to her.

Strahan and his wife divorced in 2006. At the time, a judge gave the wife over $15 million and ordered Strahan to pay $18,000 per month. This amount was reduced to $13,000 per month when he retired from the National Football League. However, the mother maintains that with his new role as a talk show host, the payments should increase to just over $18,000 per month.

Most New Jersey families do not have financial resources similar to those of Mr. Strahan, but this case illustrates the importance of seeking a fair child support order. Disputes over these payments can continue for years after a divorce is final, and in some cases, it may be possible to modify the terms of the original order. A parent has the right to fight for payments that are reasonable and allow for the care of any minor children.
